Being the Model

Nourish the Mind

“We become what we think about” What topics consume your thoughts at present? Are you happy with the answer? No? Maybe you’re wrestling with a problem that’s nagging you? Instead of stewing, try this: make a plan for action.  What can you do to improve the situation? By taking action, you remove the thought drama and move forward. Taking action, even if it’s imperfect is better than idling.

We choose what we focus on.  Choose to focus on solutions, not problems.  Choose to focus on the heroes in your life, not the villains.

“We become what we think about” is such a powerful message.  Pretty sure Buddha said it first, but I’m crushing on Earl Nightingale lately. You can listen to his Strangest Secret on YouTube.  If you do, tell me what you think.

Since working on my book, I’ve had little time to dabble on social media.  I’ve been reading a lot on the topic and process of writing. I’m also learning how to create a brand and all the other fun stuff that goes with online marketing. Now I kind of wishing I’d taken more of an interest in the undergrad marketing classes now! Ah well.  In addition to making glacial progress on the book, unplugging from social media has made me more productive in general.  I’m less inclined to be distracted by the next shiny thing if I’m not hanging out there.

I’ll close with a plea. And that’s to protect your mind. Think of all the media you are exposed to, all the things people around you say.  Be deliberate about the types of people and information you let into your life. Garbage in, garbage out, right? Remember, we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with.  That includes content you read as well as people you interact with in person.

The key is to be aware of what we think about and how it affects us. If what we nourish our minds with isn’t serving us, maybe we should just stop, or at least make an effort to counter it with something that inspires
